Just Give Us The Romantic Comedy & No One Gets Hurt

Last night I watched the film New In Town with Renee Zellwegger. I’m sure you already know that this is not her (or anyone else on the film’s) finest work. It got me thinking this morning that I can’t really remember the last really good romantic comedy. Could it be Bridget Jones’s Diary?

I peruse my DVD collection. Let’s see there’s Just Like Heaven or Wimbledon… possible candidates but uneven and not really in the same league as say a When Harry Met Sally. Waitress? Great film but doesn’t really tick all of the boxes for a rom com in my book.

I stretch my mind even further… Ratatouille? Not quite. Priceless? Good but a bit shallow. Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont? Okay so the point is… I’m getting desparate here for a quality romantic comedy. I’m not talking vapid chick flick (or anything with Kate Hudson) but rather quirky sparkling idealized romance.

Penelope?

I give up.

That is SOOOOO true! There really aren’t good romantic comedies anymore. I agree that the Kate Hudson variety (substitute Katherine Heigel, Anne Hathaway, etc. here) don’t count. Would Enchanted count? Probably not since it was Disney, but it was cute. The Holiday was ok.

Bring back quality Helen Fielding / Nora Ephron!

I would totally count Enchanted, Karen! I’m a big fan of romantic comedies that emphasize the comedy. Someone else mentioned Wall-E… I’ll have to rent that one.
